- Upper Canadians purchase land to grow apples large scale in eastern PEI
- Germant Grewal and Amarjeet Singh Jatana of Canadian Nectar Products have purchased 150 acres of land in Allliston, PEI, and are planting apple trees. They plan to sell the produce internationally. The farm is expected to create up to 400 new jobs in eastern PEI. The owners are not currently sure whether they will apply for the Temporary Foreign Work Program, but they have stated that they plan to primarily hire individuals from Kings County, including those employed in other seasonal industries that do not overlap with the apple growing season and students on summer break. The farm will create approximately 200 full time, year round positions, with an additional 150 full time positions during the six-month apple season. The land was purchased from Julius Patkai and will be part of a larger 1,000 acre project anticipated to gross approximately $40 million and yield 200,000 pieces of fruit per acre. Former Hamilton, Ontario and Deputy Prime Minister Sheila Copps is a partner with the company. Canadian Nectar Products markets the ScotiaGold brand of apples and the apples marketed out of PEI will contain a sticker designating their source. The company's future plans include creating a processing plan on PEI.
