Abstract
A study conducted by Erik Dorff and Martin S. Beaulieu of the Agriculture Division of Statistics Canada has concluded that Canadian farmers used twice as much nitrogen in commercial fertilizers in 2010-2011 as in 1980-1981. There was only a slight increase in the amount of phosphates used, however, and the use of potash decreased slightly. The researchers explained that this rate of growth was noted despite the fact that the number of farms using commercial fertilizer has decreased by nearly 50%. The study additionally notes that fertilizer accounts for a greater share of farm expenses in potato producing regions like PEI.
