Abstract
Tim Seeber, general manager of the PEI Hog Board, states that hog prices have been steadily rising since the beginning of 2014, but he also notes that many hog producers continue to carry a large debt load--a result from the 2009 crisis in the industry. Seeber claims that the recently announced free trade deal with South Korea is good news for Canadian hog producers, although Island farmers will likely only benefit indirectly. He commented that the PEI hog producers are also relieved that there have been no additional cases of porcine epidemic diarrhea beyond the single incident found in the province this past winter. Seeber expressed sadness at the cessation of a daily electronic newsletter by the Atlantic Swine Research Partnership that was centered at the Atlantic Veterinary College. The publication provided articles and marketing information geared to the Island industry.
