Abstract
Foodchain [byline column] Japanese farmers' resistance to opening up protected markets has also helped Canada to maintain its supply management system intact during trade negotiations under the Trans Pacific Partnership . (The Canadian supply management system uses high tariffs to limit imports, while guaranteeing cost of production pricing to dairy, poultry, and egg farmers.) This system has allowed PEI's dairy, poultry, and egg producers to achieve income stability and be competitive despite higher transportation and energy costs.
