Red beets promising new crop for organic growers

Abstract

Salute to Agriculture [special supplement] Joyce Kelly, executive director of the PEI Certified Organic Producers Cooperative, says that the cooperative received funding from the PEI ADAPT council to conduct field trials for growing red beets at Middelkamp Organic Produce (Glencoe) and Hakkers Produce (Belfast). The average yield was approximately 25 metric tonnes and demonstrated that growing beets for processing could be a viable crop for Island producers.
