Abstract
The settlement between potato growers and Cavendish Farms resulted in a 3.3 per cent reduction in base price and was comparable with the deal reached in other major potato growing areas in North America. The McCain growers have yet to reach an agreement with the company and a mediator has been appointed to help in moving the negotiations forward. Seed growers are also facing a new challenge that will require them to perform inspections for grade and quality before shipping within Canada and the United States. Inspections had previously been performed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. PEI Wild Blueberry Growers Association indicated that its growers had achieved a record high in 2013 production numbers and the forecast for 2014 is promising. However, blueberry growers have a new agricultural pest, Spotted Wing Drosophila, that will require the industry to develop a strategy to combat it
