Abstract
Producers who grow for Cavendish Farms have approved a deal which sees a 3.3 per cent reduction in the base price of potatoes. And increase in production volumes, coupled with less than expected market growth, has resulted in significant reduction in volumes throughout North America. Seed growers will now be required to assume responsibility for grade and quality inspections for seed tubers being shipped within the country, as of April 1. Inspections had previously been done by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, but the agency will now only audit the inspection system. This change will add further costs to growers, as they will either need to undergo training to become licensed to do inspections or they will be required to hire a licensed inspector
