Federation calls for extensive monitoring of deep water wells

Abstract

While the Federation of Agriculture supports the request of the PEI Potato Board for an end to the moratorium on deep water wells, the general farm organization wants extensive monitoring of any new wells and an independent review of the provincial water extraction policy. Members of the Federation presented their position before The Standing Committee on Agriculture, Forestry, Energy and Environment. They also called for a review of soil management of the fields to be irrigated with an emphasis on nutrient management, soil conservation and appropriate organic matter levels. They indicated supplemental irrigation would result in better quality, more stability in the marketplace, more efficient use of fertilizers and fewer pesticides needed due to less stress on crops
