A motherhood issue : discourses on mothering under duress
Description
abstract: This study examines how policy makers, the media and women view mothers who abuse
substances, who have mental health problems and who experience domestic violence. It
concludes that $(3z$(Bthe best interests of the child$(3y$(B render mothers rights as
secondary; policies based on risk assessment are negative and often prevent positive,
supportive actions; and the evidence brought to bear on decisions regarding mothering
under duress is partial and usually overlooks evidence from mothers or long-term
assessment. The study recommends a mothering framework that recognizes, respects and
restores the motherchild unit and women's equality in discussions about
mothering.
